Short version: VM-Text listens to a voice message only long enough to turn it into text. The audio is not saved. It keeps the transcript, so the same voice message is never transcribed twice, plus a few settings tied to Discord IDs.
This policy explains what VM-Text, a Discord app that transcribes voice messages, does with your data. It is run by Lavery.Jonez in Scotland, United Kingdom, who is the person responsible for your data under UK data protection law. Contact: contact@laveryjonez.uk.
1. What is processed
| Data | Why | Kept? |
|---|---|---|
| The audio of a voice message | Downloaded from Discord when it is transcribed, either automatically in a server or when someone uses a Transcribe command. | No. It is held in memory while it is transcribed, then discarded. It is never written to disk. |
| The transcript | Sent back to Discord as a reply, so you can read it. A copy is kept so the same voice message is only transcribed once, and asking again just shows the saved text. | Yes, as text only, linked to the voice message's ID. It is deleted when that message is deleted in a server the app can see, or when you ask me to remove it. |
| Display name, profile picture and a link to the message | Shown in the reply, so it's clear who sent the voice message and who asked for the transcript. | No. Used only to build the reply. |
| Your settings: Discord user ID, language and output style | Remember what you chose with /config. | Yes, until you ask me to delete it. |
| A server's settings: server ID, language and automatic transcription on or off | Remember what a server admin chose with /config. | Yes, until you ask me to delete it. |
| Technical logs | Connection events and error messages, used to keep the app running and fix faults. | Briefly, in the server's normal system logs. They don't contain audio or transcripts. |
VM-Text needs Discord's Message Content permission so that it can see the attachment on a voice message in a server. It does not read, store or act on ordinary text messages.
2. How transcription works
Transcription is done by an open-source speech recognition model (Whisper) that runs on a server I rent. Your audio is not sent to any outside transcription service, AI company or other third party.
3. Who sees a transcript
- Transcribe (private): only the person who asked.
- Transcribe (public) and automatic transcription: everyone who can see that channel.
Voice messages sent by other people may contain their personal information. Please use the public option and automatic transcription with that in mind.
4. Sharing
I don't sell your data, use it for advertising, or share it with anyone. The people involved in making the app work are:
- Discord, which carries your messages and the app's replies. See Discord's Privacy Policy.
- The hosting provider of the server the app runs on.
- Cloudflare, which serves this website and may keep standard request logs.
I may disclose information if the law requires it.
5. Why I'm allowed to process this
Under UK GDPR, the legal basis is my legitimate interest in running a useful service, and your choice to use it: a transcript only happens when someone uses a command or a server admin switches on automatic transcription. If you don't want your voice messages transcribed in a server that uses it, ask a server admin to turn it off.
6. How long data is kept
Audio is never kept. Transcripts are kept until the voice message they came from is deleted (where the app can see that happen), or until you ask me to delete them. Settings are kept until you ask me to delete them. Everything is deleted if I stop running the app.
7. Your rights
You can ask me to show you, correct or delete the settings and transcripts stored about you or your server, and you can object to or ask me to restrict how they're used. Email contact@laveryjonez.uk from an address I can connect to you, with your Discord user ID or server ID. If you're unhappy with how I've handled your data, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
8. Security
The server is kept private, the app's access token is stored on it with restricted permissions, and the only data written to disk is your settings and saved transcripts, never audio. No system is perfectly secure, but I keep the amount of data collected as small as I can.
9. Children
VM-Text is not aimed at children. Discord requires users to be at least 13, and I don't knowingly collect data from anyone younger. If you think a child's data has been stored, email me and I'll remove it.
10. This website
This site is static. It has no accounts, no cookies and no analytics.
11. Changes
If I change how VM-Text handles data, I'll update this page and the date at the top.
